Liberal Democrat candidate says ‘Vote Tory’

Posted in Uncategorized on April 22, 2010 by Leah Fraser

With much of the political chatter being around ‘Cleggmania’, I was interested to see that at least one Liberal Democrat candidate in a seat they have no chance of winning has confirmed what we all know.

Tom Holvey, the Lib Dem candidate for Selby & Ainsty told a voter, by email: ‘if all you want is Labour out then you should vote Tory for that to happen’

Poll in Liverpool Echo puts Lib Dems on 5.6% in Wallasey

The online poll in the Liverpool Echo has the Liberal Democrats on just 5.6% in Wallasey.  Further proof that they can’t win here.

Across Wirral, almost a quarter of the sitting Liberal Democrat councillors are not standing again.  After their disastrous attempts to close our libraries and leisure centres, it’s hardly surprising.

Time to publish…

Steve Pitt, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Moreton at the recent by-election and their Parliamentary candidate for Wallasey, has written another piece on his blog criticising the Conservatives.  While not referring directly to Wallasey, Steve does imply that the Conservatives are ‘keeping quiet’ on their sources of income.

Yet Steve then goes on to direct readers to the Electoral Commission’s website which has the audited accounts for the Conservatives.  Sadly, I can’t find any accounts submitted by the local Liberal Democrats (or Labour, for that matter).

So, in the spirit of his article, I have submitted a comment on his blog suggesting he publishes the most recent accounts for the Liberal Democrats in Wallasey.  Will he publish the comment and, more important, the accounts?

That way, we will know for sure that his campaign isn’t being bankrolled by this man.

We know they are struggling a bit in Wallasey (see here), especially when they had to cancel their recent ‘dressing up’ event.

  • Editor’s note: Wallasey Conservatives do not receive any money from the Party nationally, it’s central donors or trade unions.  We rely on the people who want change, to spare us some…

Don’t let Gordon seduce you…

Posted in Leaving the Lib Dems, Politics on March 6, 2010 by Leah Fraser

In his Saturday column Peter Oborne lists the reasons why Nick Clegg is likely to manoeuvre his party into a deal with Labour if there is a hung parliament.   This one really struck me as the most damning:

“LibDems have been seduced by Brown’s clever promise of electoral reform. The Prime Minister has long been opposed to proportional representation (because he believes it leads to weak governments), but he has softened his stance in a cynical ploy to cosy up to the LibDems.”

So the Prime Minister really is whispering sweet nothings into Clegg’s ears.

Why would any Liberal Democrat supporter in Wallasey or Moreton allow themselves to be seduced by Gordon Brown?

In this constituency, the Liberal Democrats haven’t done anything resembling a campaign for donkey’s years and most of the Lib Dem effort in Merseyside appears to be in Liverpool Wavertree, judging by what their agent there says.

If a Liberal Democrat in Wallasey or Moreton wants five more years of Gordon Brown, it seems the surest way to get it is by voting Liberal Democrat.

Liberal Democrat demands…

Posted in Politics on February 15, 2010 by Leah Fraser

There is a very good piece here about the latest Liberal Democrat plan to prop up Labour. Here is an analysis of their four demands:

“Investing extra funds in education through a pupil premium for disadvantaged children.”

This is already Conservative Party policy and would be a big boost for many schools in Wirral.

“Tax reform, taking 4 million out of tax and raising taxes on the rich by requiring capital gains and income to be taxed at the same rate.”

Conservatives opposed Labour’s scrapping of the 10p tax for the low paid.

“Rebalancing of the economy to put less emphasis on centralised banking and more on a new greener economy.”

We have been quite clear about the need for banking reform and a new, greener economy.

“Political reforms, including changes to the voting system and a democratically elected Lords, that go further than proposed by Labour.”

As outlined here and here, we will bring in the biggest decentralisation of power the UK has ever seen with more decisions taken locally, involving more people in the decisions affecting their lives.  Tinkering with the voting system will just enable more Nick Griffins to get elected.

Countdown begins: five more years for Gordon Brown

Posted in Uncategorized on February 1, 2010 by Leah Fraser

Liberal Democrats in Wallasey face the prospect of five more years of Gordon Brown if they don’t switch their vote.  That’s the conclusion from the latest opinion polls which show Nick Clegg’s party flatlining. They cannot win Wallasey and they know they won’t win the General Election.

If you are one of the thousands of people in our community who believes it is time for change, now is the time to get involved.  We are attracting support and help from across Wallasey and Moreton.  Click here and tell us how you can help us win.

Health Warning: they’re desperate

With the latest polls showing the Lib Dems flatlining and out of the race, it was only a matter of time before spurious claims started to emerge.  Residents in Manchester will remember John Leech’s success in convincing people that the world-famous Christie was under threat and the not-insignificant effect it had on his result.

Now, they’re at it again!  We don’t usually raise our hats to a Labour website (well, not when you look at their faltering efforts here in Wallasey).  But Labour List is well worth a look at what the Lib Dems (Fib Dems?) have tried to say about Kingston Hospital.

Of course, the Labour Party would never use scare tactics to get people to vote for them.

Oh Jean!

I don’t always see eye-to-eye with Jean Quinn  - the Liberal Democrat Cabinet responsible for all things roads-related.  I disagreed strongly with her plan to cut lollipop ladies and I am afraid I disagree with her again over the current road gritting arrangements.

Many of the roads in Wallasey and Moreton are impossible to use due to the absence of grit and now the Council is cutting usage by another 25%.

Another Lib Dem bites the dust

Sadly, this kind of behaviour can be found in all walks of life…
